About

Welcome to what I expect to be an occasional record on my naval wargaming. I envisage that the focus will be that of World War II, but there could be the occasional diversion.

Up until recently I hadn’t played any Word War II naval games for some years. However, a couple of games played against my son, who had his separately played some games, rekindled my interest. After some further thought I decided to take the plunge and decided to build a couple of small fleets.

HMS Warspite in the Indian Ocean 1942.

My first exposure to naval wargaming was back in the 1970s when I was at college. Funds were certainly limited yet some great games were played and much reading occurred. However, by the 1980s frustration with some “newer” rules, combined with other interests, drew me to other periods.

So where was I to start? Well, I did still have some models from the 1970's. Yet they were lacking in detail, being made by a local New Zealand company other options were needed. Further, I had always had something of an interest in the Mediterranean. After some consideration an order was sent to Navwar to secure some 1/3000th models. In due course they arrived and after a period in the lead mountain it was time to start some painting.

HMS Warspite, HMS Barham and HMS Valiant all from Navwar’s 1/3000th range.

With my initial focus on engagements in the Mediterranean I have centred my painting on the ships deployed at the Battle of Cape Matapan in 1941. That said, a selection of other models have been purchased to provide options for fictional engagements.

Italian heavy cruisers Zara and Fiume also from Navwar's 1/3000th range.

As to rules there are plenty options for recreating the naval battles of World War II. If you are reading this it is most likely you already have your preferred rules. The rules available of course range from the relatively simple to the very complex. At the time of writing I have played a couple of games of the original Victory at Sea rules. However, I am currently investigating Naval Thunder Battleship Row. It will be interesting to see if these sit at the level between playability and realism I am seeking.
